Summary: An experienced Legal Compliance Counsel is sought to enhance and lead the legal and regulatory compliance framework within an organization. The role emphasizes fostering a compliance culture, advising senior stakeholders, and ensuring adherence to legal obligations across various risk areas. The position is based in London and offers a hybrid working arrangement. The contract duration is between 3 to 6 months with an immediate start date.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the enhancement and ongoing development of the organisation’s legal and regulatory compliance framework.
  • Identify, interpret and oversee the implementation of new and changing legislation and regulations, providing clear updates to senior stakeholders, trustees and risk owners.
  • Provide expert legal advice on corporate governance, compliance and regulatory matters.
  • Support senior leadership in maintaining and promoting a strong compliance culture across the organisation.
  • Review and assess the adequacy of policies, procedures, controls and assurance mechanisms relating to legal and regulatory risk.
  • Provide risk management advice to compliance leads in areas including fundraising, anti-money laundering, fraud, theft, anti-bribery and corruption, and safeguarding.
  • Advise on the development of compliance policies, training programmes, communications and internal controls.
  • Support compliance with Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) legal requirements, including sustainability and modern slavery legislation.
  • Support serious incident identification, reporting and regulatory engagement, including drafting submissions and reports for senior committees and boards.
  • Oversee actions arising from serious incidents and strengthen controls to prevent recurrence.
  • Maintain litigation and compliance registers.
  • Partner with Risk, Assurance, Data Protection and ESG teams to support a coordinated and effective compliance framework.
  • Support international or cross-border compliance matters, including overseas operations and fundraising activities.
  • Assist with the provision of broader in-house legal advice as required.

Key Skills:

  • Qualified legal professional with strong post-qualification experience in corporate governance and compliance (in-house or private practice).
  • Demonstrated experience providing independent, expert legal advice on compliance and regulatory matters, including (but not limited to): Corporate governance, Regulatory compliance, Financial crime (AML, sanctions, counter-terrorist financing), Fraud, bribery and corruption, Procurement, Health & safety, Data protection, ESG and sustainability.
  • Experience working with senior leaders, trustees or boards, with the ability to influence at all levels.
  • Strong organisational and prioritisation skills, with the ability to manage multiple workstreams and deliver to deadlines with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including experience drafting board-level papers and reports.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving and judgement skills.
  • Confident stakeholder manager with a collaborative and pragmatic approach.
  • IT literate, with proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a wider legal or compliance team.
  • Experience within the charity or not-for-profit sector is desirable but not essential.

An experienced Legal Compliance Counsel is required to lead and strengthen an organisation-wide legal and regulatory compliance framework.
