Summary: The role of Legal Assistant involves supporting a large local government organization by undertaking legal and technical tasks related to legal cases. The position requires interviewing clients, drafting legal documents, representing the council in court, and managing a caseload of routine legal work. This is a 3-month contract with the possibility of extension for the right candidate, and it is classified as inside IR35. Experience in housing or civil litigation is advantageous.
Key Responsibilities:
- Interview clients and witnesses and draft statements, prepare documents for courts and tribunals including applications, statements of case, draft orders and pleadings.
- Draft correspondence, documents, notices, orders, giving advice in writing and on the telephone and in person.
- Represent the council in court.
- Take notes at hearings and conferences with Counsel.
- Instruct counsel.
- Conduct research.
- Deal with correspondence.
- Be responsible for a caseload of routine legal work.
- Attend court or tribunals or public inquiries as an advocate in straightforward applications or similar.
- Assist and support other members of staff.
- Prepare bundles for court hearings in accordance with Practice Directions.
- Keep up to date with new and proposed legislation, new cases, and other developments and review and give basic advice as required.
- Keep more senior staff informed of any important issues arising which may affect the satisfactory progress of cases.
- Conduct searches of the Probate Registry, Land Registry, Office of Public Guardian, and others as required.
- Make appropriate use of information technology.
- Safeguard the health and well-being of children and vulnerable adults.
- Carry out duties with due regard to the Council’s policies and procedures.
- Embed environmental sustainability into work, contributing to Brent becoming a carbon-neutral borough in 2030.
- Undertake any other duties commensurate with the general level of responsibility of this post.
