As a contract Azure, you are hired to design, build, migrate, and manage cloud infrastructure and services on Microsoft's Azure platform. Contract engagements cover a broad spectrum of activity including cloud architecture design, infrastructure-as-code implementation using Terraform or Bicep, application and data platform migrations, Azure DevOps pipeline configuration, security and compliance work, and ongoing platform management and optimisation. Azure is the dominant cloud platform across large UK enterprises, financial services, healthcare, and the public sector, making it one of the highest-volume specialist areas in the technology contracting market.

Azure contractors are expected to have deep practical knowledge of the core Azure service portfolio. Compute services including Virtual Machines, App Services, Azure Kubernetes Service, and Azure Functions are widely used across engagements. Data platform experience with Azure SQL, Cosmos DB, and Azure Data Factory is increasingly expected alongside infrastructure skills. Rates have remained robust, with Azure security and data platform specialists commanding premiums above the general Azure contractor market.

IR35 is UK tax legislation that determines whether a contractor is genuinely self-employed or working in a manner that resembles employment. When a contract is classified as outside IR35, the engagement is treated as a business-to-business arrangement. The contractor operates through their own limited company, invoices for services, and manages their own tax affairs including corporation tax, self-assessment, and VAT where applicable.
