Network Architect contractors are engaged to design, plan, and govern the network infrastructure that connects an organisation's systems, users, and data, ensuring that network design supports the performance, security, resilience, and scalability requirements of the business. The work involves designing LAN, WAN, and data centre network architectures, evaluating and specifying network technologies and vendor solutions, developing network standards and governance frameworks, reviewing and approving network changes within large technology programmes, and providing expert guidance on network strategy during cloud migration and digital transformation projects. Network Architects are brought in when an organisation is undergoing a significant network redesign, migrating to SD-WAN or cloud-first network models, or when an enterprise architecture programme requires senior network expertise.

The technical skills expected of Network Architect contractors are deep and broad across the network domain. Expert-level knowledge of routing and switching protocols including BGP, OSPF, and EIGRP, alongside deep understanding of network security principles including firewall architecture, microsegmentation, and zero-trust network access design, is expected. Experience designing SD-WAN solutions, typically from vendors including Cisco, Fortinet, or VMware, is standard across the market as organisations migrate from legacy MPLS-based WAN architectures. Cloud networking expertise, including the design of hub-and-spoke and transit VPC architectures on AWS, Azure, or GCP, is increasingly expected as network architecture converges with cloud infrastructure. Relevant certifications including CCIE, JNCIE, or equivalent vendor-neutral credentials carry significant weight in the network architecture contractor market.

The Network Architect contract market is a specialist and well-paying market within the broader infrastructure and networking contractor space. Demand is driven primarily by large-scale network modernisation programmes, SD-WAN migrations, and the complex network design requirements of hybrid cloud environments. Financial services, healthcare, retail, and the public sector are among the most active buyers of Network Architect contract resource, reflecting the scale and complexity of their network estates. The convergence of network and security in the zero-trust architecture model is creating demand for Network Architects who combine traditional network design expertise with deep security knowledge. Rates are at the upper end of the infrastructure contracting market, reflecting the seniority and breadth of expertise required.

IR35 is UK tax legislation that determines whether a contractor is genuinely self-employed or working in a manner that resembles employment. When a contract is classified as outside IR35, the engagement is treated as a business-to-business arrangement. The contractor operates through their own limited company, invoices for services, and manages their own tax affairs including corporation tax, self-assessment, and VAT where applicable.

Outside IR35 engagements are assessed against three key factors: the degree of control the client exercises over how the work is delivered, whether the contractor has a genuine right to provide a substitute, and whether there is a mutuality of obligation between the parties. Contracts that demonstrate contractor autonomy, project-based delivery, and the absence of ongoing employment obligations are more likely to sit outside IR35. Since April 2021, responsibility for making this determination sits with the end client for medium and large private sector organisations.

Network architecture has a low outside IR35 rate, at around 10% of contracts with a stated status. The deeply embedded nature of the role, requiring sustained access to the client's network topology, security policies, and infrastructure team, makes outside IR35 difficult to sustain for most engagements. Where outside IR35 does apply, it is typically in advisory or assessment engagements: producing a network design for a new site, conducting an architecture review, or designing a network migration strategy with a defined report as output.

Contract rates for network architect roles typically range from £600 to £1000 per day, depending on the scope of the role, required expertise, and the delivery expectations of the engagement.
