Systems Accountant contractors are engaged at the intersection of finance and technology, providing the specialist expertise needed to implement, configure, maintain, and optimise accounting and financial management systems within finance functions. The role bridges the gap between the technical capabilities of financial software and the operational and reporting requirements of the finance team, ensuring that the accounting system is configured correctly to support accurate financial processing, efficient close processes, and meaningful management reporting. Systems Accountant contractors are brought in during ERP and finance system implementation projects, system upgrades, or when the configuration and usage of existing financial systems needs to be improved to support business growth or process change.
The skills expected of Systems Accountant contractors combine solid accounting knowledge with hands-on experience configuring the relevant financial management system. ACA, ACCA, or CIMA qualification is widely expected, providing the accounting foundation needed to understand how system configuration decisions translate into financial outcomes. The primary technical requirement is deep experience with the specific financial system in use, whether SAP FI/CO, Oracle Cloud Financials, Microsoft Dynamics 365 Finance, NetSuite, Sage, or another platform. Experience designing and configuring the chart of accounts, financial periods, cost centre structures, and intercompany configurations that form the accounting framework within a financial system is expected. For implementation roles, experience managing data migration including trial balances and open items, parallel running, and user acceptance testing is additionally expected. The ability to diagnose and resolve issues in live financial system environments without disrupting financial processing is a consistently valued operational skill.
