The IT Support contract market is a high-volume, geographically distributed market driven by the consistent and sector-agnostic need for end user computing support across UK organisations. The market is one of the most accessible entry points into IT contracting, but rates are at the lower end of the IT contracting spectrum, reflecting the generalist nature of the role. Contractors who develop specific expertise in cloud-based endpoint management, particularly Microsoft Intune and Autopilot for device provisioning and management, are able to differentiate themselves in a competitive market and command better rates. The shift to hybrid working models has increased demand for contractors who can support both office-based and remote users across a range of device types and connectivity environments.

IR35 is UK tax legislation that determines whether a contractor is genuinely self-employed or working in a manner that resembles employment. When a contract is classified as outside IR35, the engagement is treated as a business-to-business arrangement.
