About Our Outside IR35 Service Desk Contract Roles
What does a service desk contractor do?
As a contract Service Desk, you are hired to provide first and second-line IT support to end users, managing incidents, service requests, and access management through ITSM platforms. Contract engagements arise during service desk implementations, transitions between managed service providers, technology refresh programmes, and to provide additional capacity during peak demand periods. The work involves logging and categorising incidents, resolving issues within defined SLAs, escalating complex problems to specialist teams, and maintaining knowledge base documentation.
Service Desk contractors need strong customer service skills combined with broad technical knowledge across Windows, Microsoft 365, Active Directory, networking fundamentals, and common enterprise applications. Experience with ITSM platforms such as ServiceNow, Jira Service Management, or Freshservice is a standard requirement. ITIL Foundation certification is expected by most clients and often mandatory. For senior or team lead roles, experience with service desk metrics, SLA management, and the ability to coach and quality-assure a team of analysts is required.
What is the market like for service desk contractors?
The Service Desk contract market is a high-volume market driven by the universal need for IT end-user support. Demand is particularly strong during managed service transitions, technology migrations, and the implementation of new ITSM platforms where organisations need experienced contractors to stand up or stabilise service desk operations. Financial services, government, healthcare, and large corporates are the most consistent sources of demand. Rates sit at the lower end of the IT contracting range but the volume of available work is substantial and consistent year-round.
What does Outside IR35 mean?
IR35 is UK tax legislation that determines whether a contractor is genuinely self-employed or working in a manner that resembles employment. When a contract is classified as outside IR35, the engagement is treated as a business-to-business arrangement. The contractor operates through their own limited company, invoices for services, and manages their own tax affairs including corporation tax, self-assessment, and VAT where applicable.
Outside IR35 engagements are assessed against three key factors: the degree of control the client exercises over how the work is delivered, whether the contractor has a genuine right to provide a substitute, and whether there is a mutuality of obligation between the parties. Contracts that demonstrate contractor autonomy, project-based delivery, and the absence of ongoing employment obligations are more likely to sit outside IR35. Since April 2021, responsibility for making this determination sits with the end client for medium and large private sector organisations.
On QualityContracts.co.uk, approximately 28% of roles with a stated IR35 status are classified as outside IR35. The proportion varies by sector and role type, with some disciplines seeing a significantly higher or lower share of outside IR35 opportunities. Each listing on this page displays its IR35 status where provided by the hiring organisation.
What service desk roles are usually Outside IR35?
Outside IR35 service desk contracts are extremely rare. Service desk work is inherently operational: answering calls, logging tickets, and resolving issues within the client's ITSM framework. Where outside IR35 does exist, it involves specific service desk setup or migration projects with defined completion criteria rather than ongoing service delivery.
How much do service desk contractors usually earn when working Outside IR35?
Contract rates for service desk roles typically range from £200 to £400 per day, depending on the scope of the role, required expertise, and the delivery expectations of the engagement. Rates shown are for outside IR35 engagements and reflect the gross day rate paid to the contractor's limited company before any personal tax obligations.
