What does a power bi contractor do?
As a contract Power BI, you are hired to design, build, and maintain business intelligence solutions using Microsoft Power BI, which has become the dominant BI and data visualisation platform across UK enterprises. Contract engagements span the full range of Power BI work: developing executive dashboards and operational reports, building and optimising complex data models using DAX, connecting Power BI to data sources including SQL Server, Azure Synapse, Databricks, and Dataverse, implementing row-level security for multi-audience reporting, and supporting Power BI Service administration and governance. Contractors are brought in to deliver a specific reporting capability, to improve or optimise an existing Power BI estate, to lead a migration from a legacy BI tool such as SSRS or Crystal Reports, or to support a Power BI Centre of Excellence rollout.
The core competencies for Power BI contracting include centre on genuine proficiency with DAX for calculated measures and columns rather than superficial familiarity with the tool. Experience building star schema data models within Power BI Desktop or Tabular models in Analysis Services is expected by most clients, alongside knowledge of Power Query M language for data transformation and shaping. Understanding of report and dashboard design best practices, including how to present complex information clearly and effectively for different stakeholder audiences, is as important as the technical build capability. For enterprise roles, experience with Power BI Service administration, workspace governance, deployment pipelines, and dataflow management is expected. Power BI Premium and Fabric experience is increasingly relevant as organisations move towards Microsoft's unified analytics platform.
