The ability to identify and address team dysfunction, coach team members and stakeholders on agile practices, and navigate resistance to agile ways of working in organisations at different stages of agile maturity is the core professional skill that distinguishes experienced Scrum Master contractors. Certified ScrumMaster (CSM) or Professional Scrum Master (PSM) certification is well regarded and frequently required, alongside practical experience delivering multiple sprints in a real product development context. Knowledge of broader agile scaling frameworks such as SAFe, LeSS, or Nexus is additionally expected for Scrum Masters working within larger multi-team delivery programmes.
